Why Your Skincare Isn’t Working—And How to Fix It

Updated: Feb 5

Have you ever felt like no matter how many skincare products you try, nothing seems to work? You’ve invested in cleansers, serums, and moisturizers, yet your acne still flares up, dark spots won’t fade, and your skin just doesn’t have that glow.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with their skincare routine, not because they aren’t trying, but because they’re missing key factors that make a routine truly effective.

Let’s break down the top reasons why your skincare might not be working—and most importantly, how to fix it.

1. You’re Using the Wrong Products (Or Harsh Ingredients) for Your Skin Type. Not all skincare is created equal, and not all products work for every skin type. A serum that works wonders for one person might clog your pores or irritate your skin. Worse, some products may contain harsh ingredients that trigger redness, breakouts, or sensitivity without you even realizing it.

How To Fix It:

  • If you have oily or acne-prone skin, avoid pore-clogging oils, alcohol-heavy products, and overly drying formulas. Instead, look for oil-balancing ingredients like niacinamide, salicylic acid, or tea tree oil.

  • If your skin is dry or sensitive, harsh exfoliants, strong acids, or high concentrations of retinol might be causing irritation. Instead, opt for hydrating ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides.

  • Not sure what’s causing your reaction? A consultation can help identify problematic ingredients and create a routine that works for your unique skin.

💡 Pro Tip: Product knowledge is key. During a consultation, we’ll go over your current routine, analyze ingredient lists, and pinpoint what may be helping—or harming—your skin.

2. You’re Not Cleansing Properly (Oil Cleansing and/or Double Cleansing Could Be Your Secret Weapon!) Cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin, yet many people are skipping crucial steps or using the wrong cleansers.

Why Oil Cleansing Is a Game Changer:

Oil cleansing has been transformational for me and many of my clients. Contrary to popular belief, cleansing with oil does NOT clog pores—it actually helps break down excess sebum, makeup, and sunscreen without stripping the skin.

Double Cleansing Is a Must for Acne-Prone & Congested Skin:

If you have acne, congestion, or wear makeup, double cleansing is non-negotiable. A single wash isn’t enough to remove everything, and leftover residue can lead to breakouts, dullness, and irritation.

How To Fix It:

  • First cleanse: Use an oil cleanser to break down sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum.

  • Second cleanse: Follow with a gentle foaming or gel-based cleanser to deep clean the skin.

💡 Pro Tip: Even if you don’t wear makeup, an oil-based cleanser can help remove impurities and balance your skin’s natural oils—especially for oily and acne-prone skin types.

3. You’re Layering Products Incorrectly. Yes, order matters! Using the wrong layering technique can reduce product effectiveness or even cause irritation.

How To Fix It:

  • Apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency: toner → serums → treatments → moisturizer → SPF.

  • Water-based products should go on before oil-based products to ensure proper absorption.

  • Actives like retinol and acids should never be mixed without expert guidance

4. You’re Expecting Instant Results. Unfortunately, skincare isn’t magic—it’s science. While some ingredients like hyaluronic acid provide immediate hydration, most products take weeks to months to show results.

How To Fix It:

  • Give products at least 6-8 weeks before judging effectiveness.

  • Stick to a consistent routine instead of frequently switching products.

  • Professional treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, and laser resurfacing can speed up results for stubborn concerns.

5. Your Skin Barrier is Damaged. Over-exfoliating, using too many harsh ingredients, or skipping moisturizer can strip your skin’s protective barrier—leading to redness, breakouts, and sensitivity.

How To Fix It:

  • Avoid using too many active ingredients at once (like retinol, acids, and exfoliants).

  • Incorporate barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and soothing moisturizers.

  • If your skin is irritated, simplify your routine and focus on hydration and repair.

6. You’re Not Protecting Your Skin from the Sun. Even the best skincare routine won’t work if you’re not wearing SPF. Sun exposure breaks down collagen, worsens hyperpigmentation, and triggers premature aging.

How To Fix It:

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, even when it’s cloudy.

  • Reapply every 2 hours if you’re outdoors.

  • If you’re using actives like retinol, AHA/BHA, or vitamin C, SPF is even more crucial.

7. Your Diet & Lifestyle Play a Bigger Role Than You Think. Skincare products can only do so much if lifestyle factors like diet, stress, and hydration are not aligned with your skin’s needs.

How To Fix It:

  • Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated.

  • Limit dairy and high-glycemic foods, which can contribute to acne.

  • Get quality sleep and manage stress, as cortisol can trigger breakouts and inflammation.
